On Trust
- I believe in a concept called the “trust battery” where we each have a level of trust for one another in a trust battery. We will sometimes do things to add more charge (more trust) and sometimes remove charge (less trust). Let’s work on recharging the battery and if either of our batteries are going low, let’s talk about why that is happening.
How I communicate
- I'm a big believer in "more reading, less meeting." In other words, I prefer to read and understand ideas & concepts ahead of a meeting so our time together can be spent discussing opinions and new ideas vs. going over the material that was sent.
- I love visuals, videos, and templates. The more visual the better and if something has been repeated a few times, I will try to move it into a template or a checklist so we don’t have to spend unnecessary time thinking about repetitive things.
How I like to be communicated with
- Provide me with context, Let me know when you are "thinking out loud" - I prefer when I have some background, personal space and time to think; avoid being overly emotional and express thoughts clearly and logically. If you haven't thought through something yet, that is fine...just let me know.
- Let me know whether you want me to listen or to help. I'm very often in problem-solving mode and that can make me come across as cold and not empathetic when you want to commiserate and I didn't expect it.
- When communicating concepts, I prefer real-world case studies over theoretical concepts
- I default to Slack/Teams chat, then Email, then Video calls
What makes me happy at work
- Productive Meetings - Meetings should be productive and worthwhile; ask me if I have any insights or observations, I appreciate that.
- Conflicts - Explain the situation logically and encourage me to consider both sides; let's work together to find a compromise.
- Above all, I like to learn and build with small teams. Every project I'm proud of has elements of both of those things. I'm working with you because I want to learn from all of you and believe I have something to contribute.
- I’m very happy to spend time together to debate if you feel that is the best way to work through something. If you set up time with me, let me know what’s on the agenda so I can be prepared.
Pet peeves
- Meetings that don't need to be meetings. I love reading and am happy to read things before a meeting so that we can use that time together in service of doing things that are best done together (discussing, reflecting, etc). Here is a nice article on effective meetings.
